Kate was lost.
She knew she was lost, but she was also lost. Need an explanation?
Kate was lost here, in the middle of a great expanse of sea. Trapped on a puny island with a group of also puny castaways. But, Kate reflected, some were good. Like Jack. Or Sawyer, when he wasn't too busy being an asshole. But not many people she had met here had been to her liking. Shannon the beauty-queen; Boone the sarcastic hermit-guy; Charlie the clumsy always-nervous rockstar; Locke the wilderness person. She hadn't met any others, unless you counted the sea and rocks and the whole bloody endless space of sand. Stupid sand. But Kate was also trapped in her mind. Lost in the spaces of nothingness, when she lost all hope and didn't know what to do anymore. Time came and went, but the whole prospect was the same. Run, hide, laugh, cry. It was a never-ending cycle, with only the brave holding on like on an upside-down rollercoaster, stuck after times of screaming. Others fell; but the brave remained, clinging onto that rail.
But there were good things about this island. Like the whole 'lost' thing. It could be handy. But Kate shook herself. No! I will not turn into a criminal! But you already are one, her creepy mind taunted. Once again Kate was lost in her mind, for nothing to help or distract. Her spells like this kept on going, unless there was something to do. But no-one was here, she had been lonely all day. Claire and Charlie, Boone and Shannon, Sayid and Shannon, Sawyer and Jaz, Hurley and Locke... and she was nowhere. Nowhere, just like she had been for months. Drifting in and out of humanity like a stray fly. Stuck. Trapped. Lost.

((Okay, this is all conjecture. Artistic license, since we know nothing about Ethan.. but this is how I'm going to play him))
Why me? Ethan wondered. It was a fair question. Why had he been sent to investigate the crash, see if there were any survivors? He was hardly the sort of guy people would be falling over themselves to make friends with. Then again, that was probably the point. Nobody would remember him from the plane, of course, so sending someone memorable would be foolish. Someone like him, someone no one would ever notice, would be able to slip in unseen and spy without anyone suspecting anything.
Of course, he'd have to actually get round to finding something out. Perhaps he'd left it too long - everyone seemed to have paired up. Ethan needed to get someone on their own, so he could weave his spell and, if it didn't work, strangle them without anyone noticing. And, as luck would have it, here was someone on their own. Someone who, by the looks of them, wouldn't have made many ties. Someone up there didn't hate him.
"Hey". He sat down next to her, trying to be friendly.

Kate looked to him, slightly wary. She hadn't remembered him from the plane. Where was he from? Evidently the plane, she thought. But why hadn't she ever seen him? Keeping these thoughts in her head, Kate smiled.
Heya. I'm Kate
Kate said, still fairly wary. She wanted someone else here right now. Somehow this guy didn't seem quite normal. Not safe. But then sometimes Kate couldn't be either. But that was just her. Now, who was this person?

Ethan smiled back, making a special effort since he could tell she was suspiscious. Eh, maybe he was just paranoid. "Ethan... Ethan Rom."
Mentally he ran Kate over... Loner, probably, with some dark secret. Excellent. Ethan glanced down the beach, taking notes to report back later. Nothing really grabbed his attention except... A blonde girl. A highly attractive and, more importantly, evidently heavily pregnant blonde. Fantastic. Better than he could ever have hoped.
But that would have to wait. He'd have to be cagier than that. He turned back to Kate, still smiling. "So.. plane crash. Crazy.... Where are you from, Kate?" Uch, so awkward. So strange to be having a real conversation, to be getting to know someone. But hopefully she'd be somewhat lenient. Afterall, he reminded himself, still carefully constructing his new identity, you've just survived a plane crash

Who was this person, and why was he looking at Claire so strangely? Ethan Rom... nope, didn't ring a bell. Of course it wouldn't. You don't know everyone on the plane. Kate put on a fake smile, lying through her teeth.
Oh, I'm from California. I'm a...
Kate's brain searched for a cover-up, frantically. This person was very close. She'd almost let slip her real job. Her former real job.
Landscaper
A landscaper? Oh, what a great one. She had nothing to do with plants. Let 'em grow wherever they wanted to. Kate changed the subject abruptly.
Have you met the other castaways yet? Claire, Locke, Shannon, Sayid, Sawyer, Jaz, Hurley, Rose, Boone, Charlie, or Jack?

"A landscaper... wow, that's.." Ethan let it trail off. He didn't really have many conversation topics based on controlling plants, seeing as here they did what they wanted, and so was more than grateful when she changed the topic.
"What? Oh.. no" Cover up.. cover up! Quick... Thinking on his feet, Ethan continued. "Umm... I haven't really met anyone yet. Spent most of yesterday thinking no one else had survived." (that, at least, was true). He saw an opportunity to get lots of information for relatively little effot, and was quick to capitalise on it. "Who's who, then?"

Kate was a little wary, but not overly. Some reason this guy creeped her out. Like a gigantic spider she had seen on her wall when she was 7, and couldn't sleep for fear it would crawl onto her face. She couldn't let her guard down for fear this guy would do something: like hurt her or triumphantly escape. But if he wasn't, what was with rejecting a guy because he asked for a few names? That would be downright cruel. Especially as we're all in this together. Maybe she was just being foolish.
Um, Claire is over there, the pregnant one; Sawyer's a Southerner, so you'll know him when you hear him; Locke's an old tough chap; Jack's a doctor; Shannon's a blonde beauty-queen; Charlie's the little blonde guy; Rose is a motherly stature; and Sayid's Israeli, I think. Thats all I know.

((hehe, like a gigantic spider... fantastic.))
It was more than enough. Anything else he could figure out for himself, if and when the need arose. Now it was time to change tactic - she seemed to have accepted his 'lie' about surviving the plane crash (well, she didn't have any reason not to, now, did she?), so it was time to start making some connections. It was risky, he knew, and the others had warned him against getting involved - the whole point was not to be noticed - but he needed someone he could, if not trust, then at least use. Someone to act as his gateway to this group. And Kate seemed like just the person...
"So, Kate.." Ethan smiled again. "Lanscaper, from California..." He trailed off, hoping she'd pick up on something and start a conversation, of sorts. Given how abruptly she'd changed the topic last time hopefully mentioning her past again would spark something off.

Kate had thought before the words slipped from Ethan's mouth, suspecting her might talk about her past. Well, try to. So she had brainstormed and created yet another on-the-spot character like she was used to doing.
Yep, Kate the Landscaper from California. I'm the designer at Weed Wonders: "We have the stock, you get the savings!" Dont hesitate to pop down sometime, if we ever get through this. You're Canadian, right? Whats your occupation?
(OOC: Yep. The giant hairy spider, you are now known as. I hereby knight you, Giant Hairy Spider. Lol, jk!)

(( <- Arise, Giant Hairy Spider.. has a nice ring to it, lol. I shall use it henceforth.. Have a bucket load of Karma for suggesting it))
And that, my dear, is what we call turning the tables Ethan was going to laugh, but stopped short. Why oh why hadn't he thought this through, come up with a decent character before trying to inflitrate? Quick, chose something.. something so boring no one would want to spend much time talking about it. "I'm an.. insurance broker"
Stupid! Stupid! What the hell do you know about insurance? his head screamed at him, but he'd commited to that now, and Kate 'Weed Wonder' from California didn't seem like she'd have much of a clue what to say about it anyway... Still, might as well embroider it, use the 'company line', as it were. "I was on a company retreat in Australia.. stayed on a couple of days to sight see.. Guess that was a stupid decision"

Kate nodded. Too right. Biggest mistake ever. Her life was. Well, not before. Not before. After. And during.
Have any family, Ethan?
She asked, trying to make small talk boredly. So, he was Ethan Rom, Insurance Broker from Canada. Great. Seemed just as interesting as herself. Which in other words means totally boring. If only he was like, a drag queen. Or if there was someone who was. Now, that'd spice things up!

((Why, why put Ethan in such an awkward position, freckles? That just ain't nice ;D Anyhow, brace yourselves for the one and only time Sawyer will ever save the Giant Hairy Spider))
"Are you ugly? A liar like me? A user, a lost soul? Someone you don't know.." Sawyer wandered down the beach, sometimes singing to himself, other times just filling in the notes.. Jaz was.. somewhere. He didn't know, and was past caring. All that rambling about kids in gasmasks was starting to drive him insane. But at least that was talk. Everyone else seemed to be avoiding him.. no idea why, when he'd been so useful and approachable so far. What ah wouldn't give for a decent conversation right about now...
One of the wierd things people claimed to have noticed about the island was how it seemed to grant wishes... Sawyer predictably hadn't got much faith in the theory, but he had to smile to himself when he spotted Kate up ahead. Okay, so they hadn't exactly got on so far... but hell, she didn't seem to hate him either. And Sawyer couldn't resist the prospect of a complicated lil' firebrand like her. Some random guy he didn't recall seeing anywhere else (although that in itself wasn't suspicious, given how hot the crowd was on him) was there too, but he chose to ignore that, striding up with his usual grin. "Mornin' Freckles."

Kate sighed, but not completely annoyed that Sawyer had come. It was a bit creepy to be around Ethan all the time. He was just... weird. Strange. Kate wondered if that was how other people saw her. Was she? Was she named an easy target? Was she hopelessly caught up in it all? Or was she an outsider? How was Kate supposed to know?
She turned her head at the sound of Sawyer's classic voice, smiling slightly before letting it drop and looking back to Ethan. How would he take it? Relieved, most likely, at having met another person. But if he was the person Kate had silly suspicions about, he wouldn't be. It was all up to Ethan, to show whether he was a threat or not. And Kate was watching.
Heya!
Kate called to Sawyer, as she smiled.
(OOC: Question: Why do you call me Freckles OUT of Character?)

((Joke.. meaningless, stupid joke. Helps me to remember which mode I'm in if I stick in some Sawyerisms when I'm being Sawyer... . Plus, unlike most of the others on here, I don't know you outside this site and therefore have nothing else to call you))
Relieved didn't quite cover it. Sure, Ethan was fairly convinced that he didn't, and wouldn't ever, like this brash Southerner. But it was more than convenient for him to bowl in about then, save Ethan the trouble of building up yet more back story.
He wasn't going to stick around. Ethan turned to Kate and smiled, then got to his feet. "I'd better go... stuff to do. It was.. nice, talking to you." He didn't say anything to Sawyer, just nodded vaguely and headed off down beach.

Sawyer watched the guy leave... Something about him was a little, well, wierd. Sure, he didn't have much of a right to pass judgement on anyone else, given the pillar of society he'd been up to now, but still... this new comer had hims freaked. Where had he been up 'til now? If Sawyer had pitched in back after the crash, then he'd probably not have felt the nagging suspicion at not having spotted him before.. as it was, he'd just sat and watched, and so got a look at most of the survivors. Stilll, he was probably just being paranoid.. spending too much time with the neurotic Jaz would end up doing that to you, he concluded.
When he got out of site he tilted his head the direction he'd gone. "Who's that?" Sawyer sat down next to Kate, and considered getting out a smoke, but remembered her little 'cancer stick' rant and thought better of it. Without the little white stick he felt sort of... awkward, not having that to play with to diffuse the tension.
