If you need to find out more about a character, watch the series. Or check out the wealth of information on the internet
Boone
Boone, Shannon's stepbrother, is a successful businessman and the chief operating officer of his mother's lucrative wedding businesses.
But his relationship with Shannon is, at best, problematical - and his wealth has only made him a target for her manipulative scams.
After the crash, he becomes the protégé of John Locke, the mysterious figure who seems to have a secret connection with the island.
But how does Boone really feel about Shannon? And what is the tragedy from his early childhood that haunts him still?
Charlie - played by admin
Charlie is a musician from Manchester, England. A bass player from the band Drive Shaft, his rock 'n' roll lifestyle have left him ill-prepared for the elemental struggle now facing him.
But he quickly demonstrates an unsuspected strength, volunteering to accompany Jack and Kate in the search for the missing transceiver, despite the threat of the mysterious creature in the jungle.
It soon becomes clear that Charlie has long been in the grip of his own private crisis, which has left him bruised and battered, but also cunning and resourceful.
And there is something Charlie is even more afraid of than the unknown...
Claire
The only native Australian main character, restaurant worker Claire is eight months pregnant at the time of the crash.
With no father around to help bring up a child, she has very mixed feelings about the impending birth, and has been contemplating giving up the baby for adoption.
Although she is friendly, her condition separates her from the other castaways. And she has her own reasons for keeping her distance...
All mothers think their babies are special. But Claire has been given good reason to believe her child will be more 'special' than most...
Hurley
A young Latino from the Los Angeles area, Hurley quickly bonds with Jack and Charlie, and his open, friendly nature makes him a popular figure with the other castaways.
But does he also share a hidden relationship with the mysterious John Locke?
Either way, it soon becomes apparent that Hurley is not simply the friendly, happy-go-lucky guy he at first appears.
For a start, he's considerably richer than the average man-in-the-street. By about $156 million.
And then there's the matter of his luck. Good or bad, he seems to have an awful lot of it...
Jack
Jack is a neurosurgeon from the USA. In the immediate aftermath of the plane crash he is the first to react to the crisis – overcoming his own pain to rescue the wounded.
With his inner strength and sharp brain he quickly emerges as a leader to the survivors, who increasingly look to him for guidance.
Jack's closest ally is Kate, but their intimate friendship sparks a rivalry with Sawyer, who seems convinced she harbours a guilty secret.
And perhaps the good doctor has his own skeletons in the closet. Is he only pretending to be unmarried? And how was he involved in the events that caused his father to flee the USA?
Jin
Jin is the husband of Sun, but their tense relationship indicates anything but a marriage made in heaven.
A Korean man employed by his wife's wealthy father, Jin is the only non-English speaking survivor. This sets him apart from the others, who also disapprove of the aggressive way he behaves to his wife.
Hard-working and skilled at fishing, Jin can play an important part in the group's survival, but he is hiding some crucial facts behind a wall of silence.
What are the real reasons behind the tensions between him and his wife? And why does he pretend that his own father is dead?
Kate
Although her past is shrouded in mystery, Kate's positive qualities are clear from her first moments on the island.
In the initial crisis she shows bravery and determination, stitching the wounds on Jack's lacerated back despite having no medical training.
Intelligent and level-headed, she strikes up a close friendship with Jack, but not everyone warms to her. Sawyer, in particular – convinced she is not the innocent she first appears – is full of awkward questions.
Why is she travelling on Flight 815? Is she a fugitive from justice? And if she is on the run, what crime or crimes did she commit?
Locke
A middle manager in a Californian box company with a geekish obsession with wargames and survivalism, John Locke is a mystery to everyone – even himself.
Raised by a foster mother, an investigation into his biological parents has left him confused and embittered – and minus one kidney...
But does he really have a mystical connection with the island - and what is the nature of his previous association with Hurley?
And how could a plane crash somehow restore the ability to walk in someone who has been paraplegic for the last four years?
Michael
The survivors in Lost are all strangers to each other. Even the blood relatives...
Michael is Walt's father – a construction worker from New York who once dreamed of becoming an architect. When his girlfriend gave birth to his son he gave up these dreams to support his young family.
And then found his girlfriend was leaving him for another man.
Years later, her sudden death leaves him flying to Australia in the company of Walt, the son he hasn't seen in years. And this isn't turning into the kind of father/son bonding trip he had in mind...
Sawyer
A native of Tennessee, Sawyer speaks in a lazy southern drawl that might soothe and comfort Claire's baby - but usually has the opposite effect on his fellow castaways.
A smart-talking rebel, full of rude insults and crude suggestions, he quickly alienates himself from most of the survivors. And his unappealing habit of collecting and hoarding items from the crash only fuels their hatred.
But are his arrogance and aggression just another con trick? Do they mask a tragedy from his past that torments him still? And is he even the man he claims to be?
Sayid
Early on, Sayid clashes with Sawyer, who accuses him of being a terrorist. Sayid then reveals that he is a veteran military officer who saw service in the Gulf War.
Albeit in the Iraqi Republican Guard...
With his background in communications, Sayid's skills could be invaluable in the survivors' rescue plans – a fact quickly recognised by Jack, who includes him in his leadership circle.
But is Sayid communicating all the facts about himself? What are the memories of torture that haunt him? Perhaps Sawyer's early suspicions about Sayid are nearer the truth than anyone realises...
Shannon
Shannon is Boone's stepsister by marriage – but their relationship is a lot more complicated than that...
Early into the survivors' ordeal she establishes her poor little rich girl credentials – while the others ransack the fuselage for items of value, she rescues her bikini and indulges in a spot of sunbathing.
Her selfishness alienates many of the castaways, but it would be a grave mistake to underestimate her, as Boone has found out all too often in the past.
Manipulative and highly intelligent, there's definitely more to this anything-but-dumb blonde than meets the eye...
Sun
Sun is one half of a marriage in trouble – with her husband, Jin, acting as a literally silent partner.
Sun's extensive knowledge of herbal medicine could prove invaluable to the survivors, but her relationship with the group is compromised by her husband's refusal to integrate.
And when he discovers that she's been keeping a secret from him, it appears that their already rocky relationship is heading for an irreversible breakdown.
But what was the root cause of the problems in their marriage – and what drastic steps is she prepared to take in order to save it?
Walt
Walt is Michael Dawson's 10-year-old son, who has recently been reunited with his father after years of separation.
The pair were travelling to Australia to arrange for Michael to take formal custody of Walt after the death of his mother.
In the aftermath of the crash, Walt seems more troubled by the absence of his pet dog, Vincent, than anything else. But is there more to this seemingly innocent 10-year-old than meets the eye?
Why was his step-father so anxious for Michael to take custody of Walt? And why do strange 'things' tend to happen around him, especially when he's angry or upset?
