Context - Sawyer, foraging in the forest for yet more stuff, found somewhat more than he expected. Jaz, another survivor. They made their way out of the forest and Sawyer handed Jaz over to Jack... This is detailed in Dangling by a threadEvening had set in, and turned into night. Most sensible people had headed back to whatever shelter they'd managed to buld themselves. Sawyer, on the other hand, was just heading out... although how insensible that was, given that he wasn't a people person, remained debatable. He made his way over to the fireside and crouched on the edge of the flickering light. The fire crackled invitingly, and a small wind played with his hair. Sawyer reached into the back pocket of his jeans and pulled out a slightly battered glossy - Oceanic's InFlight Magazine. He didn't know why he'd kept it, aside from that he hoarded everything, but hell, what else was there to do? Shifting into a more comfortable seating position, leant up against a chunk of what the has-been popstar had referred to as "Engine Stuff" when bumming a smoke off him earlier, pulled out a cigarette and lit up, flicking through the crumpled pages.

After a very long day, Jaz was free. Well as free as one could be on an island. She sighed, walking away from Jack's tent towards one of the fires. As she watched, someone walked down and sat by it. She grinned. Sawyer.
She walked slowly down towards him. She had got the feeling no one liked Sawyer. It was the way people behaved around him. She herself thought he was great! But of course she had always been friends with 'strange' people. She sat down beside Sawyer "Hey Cowboy, how you going?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. He smoked? She wasn't really surprised, who would be. Nearly everyone smoked these days. She sighed, running a hand through her hair a she waited for his reply

Sawyer looked up from the magazine, viewing Jaz from behind his hair, one eyebrow raised. "Same ol'... Still Lost".
He smiled at her, taking a drag on his lil' killing stick before seeming to divert his attention back to the interminably dull magazine, although really he was somewhat loathe to look away. He liked the kid already... as much as he ever liked anyone, in any case, and was intrigued as to why she'd sought him, of all people, out. Besides, he was dying for a decent conversation... All in all, Jaz was shaping up to be a far more intriguing and appealing prospect than the bland blonde bimbo he's spent most of the morning hawking sunscreen to, or the hysterical women who'd been begging him to hand over some trinket or other. Some dull flicker of recognition, between two kindred spirits or something... He shrugged it off. No one was like him, and he didn't deserve to fit with normal society anyway. Her interest was probably out of duty, or some other such dull notion, and no real affection, because he was, and always would be, unlikeable - the letter burning its way through his denims was proof enough of that.
None of that warmth or interest could be read on his face, of course. He projected the same "Couldn't Care Less" Attitude pretty much 24/7... and his next words were no different. "How did it go with Dr. Jack-ass?"
((Bla, not great. I'm out of practice.. my inner redneck is fading away! Oh well... See you later))

Jaz snorted, “That’s a horrible name! He’s not that bad. I think he’s sweet” she said. This was a very girly thing to say, but she didn’t care. He was. He put everyone in front of himself. She shrugged “He’s really nice.” She finished, tossing her hair over her shoulder. She sighed. “You know what we need. Marshmallows. I mean of all the things to not have on a island. Marshmallows? All I have is chewing gum” she said. It was true. You had to have marshmallows on a island.
She reached over, dragging her bag (which she had dumped there some moments before) towards her. Opening it, she fumbled through. Nope. She only had about 50 packets of chewing gum, CD player, Wallet and a few other random items. She sighed heavily, this could be a long wait. “I still can’t believe they haven’t found us. Stupid search and rescue people. Honestly!” she said. This was random talk. Nothing interesting, she didn’t think she was a very interesting person that’s all.

Jaz snorted, “That’s a horrible name! He’s not that bad. I think he’s sweet” So that was what she liked, then? Well, he couldn't fault her choice.. Jack was probably the best person to have on side. Sawyer just couldn't ever like the guy, that was all... Hell, no it wasn't. Sawyer didn't like most people. Jack he hated with a fiery venegeance... he was just like a cut-out comic-book superhero, and Sawyer couldn't wait to see him screw up.
He grinned over the magazine. "Marshmallows would be fantastic, sure.." He couldn't help but run a critical eye over the contents of her bag, noting what they were for later incase he neede to... trade. Yeah, barter it out. Caveman style. Not steal.. he was above that sort of thing.
“I still can’t believe they haven’t found us. Stupid search and rescue people. Honestly!” Sawyer yawned and stretched, rasping his fingertips against day old stubble. "Abdull.." - he checked himself, seeing how his last nickname had been recieved - "Ah mean, our old buddy Sayid, thinks they can't locate us..."

Jaz grinned “you like nicknames don’t you?” she said. Sayid. She knew him. Hadn’t talked to him, but she knew who he was. “Well see that all depends. I mean if we were on an island, they would find us. Unless they didn’t know where we were or the island didn’t exist” she replyed. It was true. If it didn’t exist you couldn’t look for it.
Pausing she dove into her bad pulling out a packet of chewing gum. She popped a piece in her mouth and looked at Sawyer, raising an eyebrow in a ‘you want some’ kinda way.

"S'a good point" He smiled at her suggestion that the island didn't exist.. Wierd stuff had been happening, sure... But Sawyer was a down-to-earth sort of guy, and found those sort of ideas hard to swallow. He'd already heard most of the theories being banded about - that they'd all died, or been abducted by aliens...
Insane, the lot of them. They were on an island, possibly an undiscovered one. End of. And it didn't bother him that probably no one was looking for them, thought they'd all died, because going back had lost its appeal. Once they found out what he'd down... safe to say he'd have more of a future here. "Ah think you've been watchin' too much Twilight Zone, but could be.."
He shrugged and raised one corner of his mouth into a half-smile at her possible gum offer, meaning 'If you're offering, sure'

"Excuse me Twilight Zone is a good show!" she retorted, folding her arms. "She pushed the packet towards him, sticking out her tounge in a childish way. She didn't care. No one knew how she acted before. She could change, no one knew. It was a new start, for eveyone.
"Sawyer" Jaz said "What did you do before we crashed? Just wondering, you don't have to tell me, just curious" she finished. It was like being little again, asking a girl why she only lived with her mother, rude but she was little and curious. She cocked her head to one side, hoping she hadn't insulted him.

Sawyer took the packet and pulled out a strip, leaning back against the logs and bits of random junk people had hauled into a semi-circle around the fire to act as seating. Chucking the stub of his smoke into the flames, he gazed into - or past - them, at nothing in particular, trying to work out what the hell he was meant to say to that...
Something about Jaz was so childlike, and that was dangerous. It invited you to trust, while like a spider they could weave a web around you, one you refused to see because you couldn't believe someone so innocent could be so twisted... It was a good trick, one he would have played himself, if his inner child hadn't died back in 1979... Instead he'd had to rely on more adult desires. Passion and fear were his playmates, and they'd brought him plenty of shiny new toys for very little effort.
The island had given them all a new start, sure, but Sawyer couldn't leave who he was. It was in there, subtly controlling each and every thing he did... hadn't his actions, goddam it, even his thoughts about this kid, so far confirmed that? Besides, he didn't deserve to start again. He was damaged goods, fit only for being hated... But he couldn't come out and tell her straight what scum he was.
"That's a... good question...." And it was. What exactly did he do? He couldn't tell her that he seduced women, robbed men, conned people and generally acted like a dick to one and all. "I guess you could say ah'm a.. business man." A slight ironic smile played on his lip.

"Ah shifty ol' buisness man eh?" she said with a grin. She blew a bubble with her chewing gum, smirking as it gave a satisfying pop. She lent against one of the large bags someone ad dumped there and stared into the fire.
An odd look suddenly flickered over her face, one of utter discust. Not because of what Sawyer had said, more of herself, being discusted by herself, her actions. Why? Jaz had sworn to never take an interest in men. Maybe because her best friend was heart broken when her husband took of with everything she ad. Jaz swore never to let that happen.
But here she was, talking to Sawyer, and she had to admit she liked him it was hard no to. She hung her head slightly, as if in shame. She let out an unhappy sigh, closing her eyes. She felt dizzy and tired, but she couldn't sleep, her mind was buzzing. She looked up, running a hand through her hair, she really wished she wasn't here right now.
((Sorry that was rubbish, I can't think...))

((No it wasn't))
"Yeah.." He laughed, though it wasn't funny. Shifty Ol' Business Man didn't even begin to cover it. Dear Mr. Sawyer, you don't know who I am but I know who you are and I know what you done... He folded the strip of gum and started chewing, not caring whether she noticed the darkness in him or not.
She was just the kind he'd have picked, given the choice.. The passive ones were too easy to play, but one like Jaz was a challenge.. one he always one, because he knew the game inside out. They thought they had the power, that it was all their idea... Better than any blinkers he could have given them.
Glancing back up after a few moments silence, he noticed she had her own lil' black cloud hovering somewhere above those blonde waves. "You all'right?"
((bla.. and I'm watching Confidence Man and all... Oh well))

Jaz's head snapped around "Wha? Oh yea just thinking" she said softly. She was agitated now, shifting in the sand, cracking her knuckles. She glanced around, it was growing dark. OK now she was scared. She was 21, afraid of everything that wasn't there.
She wrapped her arms around one knee, the other leg stretched out straight. "Do you think we'll ever get off here?" she asked, turning to look at Sawyer. She wasn't sure if she wanted to go back. She didn't want to work, she wanted to stay on the island.

((okay, enjoy that (ha, whatever) and I'll see you later))
Was she... scared? Damn, he'd never seen that one coming.. though he guessed it wasn't because she, like him, knew no one was coming, least not any time soon.
"Honestly?" - he shifted a little closer to her, though not anywhere that could be constued as forcing himself into her personal space, and crossed his arms over his chest, glancing up at the darkening sky as if thinking.. "Not really, no" He smiled at her for a moment. The fact that no one was coming.. it didn't bother him. Hell, somewhere deep inside it pleased him. He had nothing to go back for... most people were probably glad he'd gone MIA, and he sure as hell didn't miss anyone, because he had no one.

Jaz grinned "So positive arn't you?" she said. But it was true. The chances of them getting rescused seemed slim. She sighed "That is slightly depressing though." she muttered, more to herself than anyone else.
She did feel slightly sad, having left everything behind. Everything she had, everything she worked for was gone. She didn't belong here. She was a girl who had to look good, have the latest fashion, she wouldn't last. "Life sucks" she said, rolling her eyes "Gosh this is usless. Stupid plane, now were gonna be eaten by the scary tree cutter" she snapped. She wasn't angry at Sawyer, just at herself, at life.

"So positive aren't you?" "What can I say?" he grinned. "Ah'm just an eternal optomist..." And, truth be told, he was. Because he didn't see anything sad about being on the island. Hell, it was the best thing about this whol' escapade which had begun back in his hotel room, with Hibbs... Or, even before that, back under the bed, listening to the horrible silence...
"Stupid plane, now were gonna be eaten by the scary tree cutter" "Hey, calm down Sickle, it ain't all bad... Maybe we'll get rescued. Ah mean, someone's gonna have noticed that a plane went missing, right?" Yeah, he really didn't know what to say to make her feel less sad and angry. He rolled his eyes at the mention of the treecutter. "You're not tellin' me you believe in this monster too?"
((aww! I'm watching Outlaws. Poor lil' Sawyer! That's just horrible!))
